RE: What Gear should I run????
if the question is asked so much why not just run an end all be all gear thread and make it a sticky? i was considering starting a thread about it, but i knew if i waited three or four days someone else would.
btw, is there any truth to the 3.90 gears not being as strong as the 3.73 and 4.10's?

RE: What Gear should I run????
We didn't buy our cars for gas mileage, so I won't get into that debate. Just ask yourself how you plan on driving your car.
If you drive your car basically year round, like an every day car, get the 3.73's. 4.10's are overkill for this type of use. They will cause driveabilty problems. First gear will be useless, among other things. I had 4.10's in my '89 T/A, and they sucked for everyday use.
If your Stang is a weekend only, dry weathertype car, then get the 4.10's.
I went with the 3.73's because I drive my Stang everyday, and for the way I use my car, they rock.

Sorry, I re-read your post and saw you were talking about what was best for the track.
Get the 4.10's. I saw .5's with my '89 T/A with justthe gear swap, and I think the '97 GT'shave less HP and TQ thenmy '89, so you'll probally see about the same.
I haven't run the '00 at the track yet, but I expect easy 13.7's with the 3.73's.

RE: What Gear should I run????
An 89 Trans Am does not have more hp and tq than a 96-98 GT. My friend has a 88 T/A with a 305, the ratings on that are 170/250 and the 97 GT is 215/285, and is a lighter car. My friend can't keep up with me on the road. Even if you had a 5.7 L 3rd gen firebird, I think they still had less hp.

RE: What Gear should I run????
i just installed my 3.73's abouta month ago and they are by far the best all around gear you can feel a diffrence there still good on the highway as i hit 27mpg last time i went home from school (thats all highway for 6 hours) and they helped me pick up 2mph at the track as well as drop 1-2 tenths
