Shifting gear w/o the clutch
 

just as the title says is this safe to do i use the clutch to engage first but second through fifth i shift when the rpm's are between 2650-3000 and it slides into gear like butter. any1 else do this????

I wouldn't do that it will put wear on your clutch and transmission.

If you are matching revs then it is fine however this is pretty tricky to do. You can end up messing up the servos and bend the selector fork. Just things to consider.

yea no... 1st... no wear on the clutch... but youll wear out your syncros quickly... which, as we all know, ford didnt exactly help us out w. the trannys in these cars..

so... keep doing it.. spend 600 for a rebuild kit, or 1100 for a rebuilt trans... or dont... and buy a clutch for 2-300 bucks

Its a neat trick, mainly if your clutch goes out or is going out and you need to limp it somewhere.

fixed it for ya. Honestly, if your clutch works, there is no need to take the chance of messing up your syncro's. If it goes out, and you have a place to park it, park it. No sense in messing things up.

I would say don't do that! You'll be looking for a new tranny in no time if you start doing that.

I attended a proffessional truck driver school many years ago as part of my job. The instructors said that even with 18 wheelers, the selector forks are often damaged by drivers trying to shift w/o the clutch. When you depress the clutch, it takes pressure off the fork. Yes, you probably could shift w/o clutch if you timed it perfect every time, but the times you miss you are doing damage.

Manual transmissions are not given a clutch for decoration.

Just because you don't have to use it every time is a pretty retarded reason to not use something for its intended purpose.

thats what i call powershifting
