Default 02 GT with "older" style water pump?

Hey Guys,

I just tried to install my Steeda Underdrive pullies from American Muscle, but the water pump pullie for the mid 01-2004 didn't fit correctly. After doing some research and looking on their site I saw that my 2002 GT actually has a "older" style (96-mid 2001) water pump. I just assumed since my car was a 2002 it would have the new style water pump.

Im like the 3rd owner of this car, but I'm just going to assume that at some point a previous owner replaced the water pump with an older one? is this possible? are they interchangeable? or is it impossible, meaning someone swaped engines to an older one?

If its just a swaped water pump any benifits in upgrading to the new design? I can get the part at the local auto parts store for like $50. how hard is it to swap it out? time consuming?

Look at the door sticker and see when it was madeif it was a very early 2002 model then it might have been assembled with the earlier engine. In order to install the earlier pump you'd need the pulley too, it wouldn't make any sesne to do that unless that was all that was available.

haha. Good call on checking the door sticker. Turns out its an 02 model made in November of 2001... hm. that explains a lot. I'm going to assume it just came like that and try and get the pulley exchanged by AM. thx Cliffyk!

When they make hidden, mostly trivial, changes like the "mid-2001" stuff, it's not unusual to find cars built even months later that have the older style components. There was an earlier engine next in line of the rack the day they built yours...

Had the same problem, switched the pump. Pretty easy. Check you alternator too, I had to shim out the pulley. Some of the aftermarket alternators have a weird case.
