Trans Rumor/myth? Pls. help!

Hi all,

I have a 96 GT, with brown/black/burned trans fluid. I heard that if I change the fluid out at this stage, there is a chance that the trans will go out on me. Or if I didn't do anything to it, there is a chance that the trans will go on me...What to do?!? What would you do if you were me? Change it and take a risk? I don't neccesarily have $2500 for a rebuilt trans right now, so please help!

Thanks!

Its true that if you have a tranny in really bad shape, that that dirty transmission fluid thats in it is whats keeping it shifting. I can tell you one thing though, if I were you I would change it asap. Just because it is possible doesnt mean it happens often, but it does happen. If you don't change it now you will definately have to get a transmission soon anyways, if you do change it then you may very well get 8 more years of life out of it.

No doubt about that. If theres something wrong with your tranny its impossible to say whats gonna happen either way. But keep in mind that the more you drive it, the more its probably cost you to fix it.

If the trans fluid is burnt, that means that something burned it,changing the fluid isn't gonna make it better or worse. The thing that burnt the fluid----clutch,bearings,torque converter----needs to be replaced.
