Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

Just got back from looking at a 2002 GT 5 speed manual with 39,000 for $12,000. I think it sounds like a good deal. Comes with a Flowmaster cat back (that sounds wicked) and a K&N CAI. I've tried searching (which is a pain trying to search through Google) and I've seen reports of over 30mpg from some people. I have a 50mile round trip all highway to and from work and I think I am responsible enough to keep my foot off the skinny pedal to maximize fuel economy. So I'm curious what peoples best MPG have been with the 4.6 GT? My other concern is winter driving. I live in VT and I have a Subaru right now so I've been toying with the idea of keeping it only as a winter car, but I'd rather not. How do the Mustangs do in snow? I sometimes have to go out before the plows have been through which is no problem for the Subi and the AWD but how would the Mustang deal with it?

I just test drove it today and boy between the power and the sound I want it, but there are just a few questions that need to be figured out first.

Thanks!

I hope this is in the right place...but I'm a newb so you never know...

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

Well, if you want fuel economy and the ability to drive in the winter, you don't want a GT. Sorry, that's the honest truth. If you are very good and it's all highway, you could get maybe 28mpg, but that's pushing it. Also, you could get some good Blizzaks for the winter, but it still will not perform very well. You will have a hard time driving in the snow, especially if you buy any performance upgrades that give you more low-end torque. Just my .02.

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

Yeah I'm not looking for wicked high numbers, heck my Subi only gets 24 on a good day. But I was hoping that with a very very light foot it would be possible to reach 30mpg. I wasnt really planning on adding any more parts to it. I am happy with the exhaust and CAI.

with a 93 octane tune, i tested my gas mileage from ohio to GA, for two tanks of gas and got consistantly 28mpg, so it is possible if you dont drive crazt, i might have gotten thirty if i didn't floor it on every onramp! i say buy it it sounds like a good deal, in winter, mine is fine, but i live in GA and we don't get snow here! good luck man

driving in the snow sucks period , but with a gt it makes it 10 times more terrible. I got stuck at least once a day last winter here in Michigan.

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

On regular 87 octane with no major upgrades straight freeway the best I have pulled is 26MPG and that was driving speedlimit since I had my 1 year old in the car with me. "Only a prick would be hauling ass on California freeways with a kid in the car." In regular city driving I get between 20-23 mpg. However I do have 3.73 gears so that would take awayMAYBE 2mpg's

If you gotta deal with the snow alot, it's would definitely be better with an AWD. As much as I hate to say it, you'd prolly be better off selling yours and financing an STI. Good power+AWD=Fun & Traction. Just my opinion though

in my 2000 auto gt w/ mods in sig. i get about 23ish on city/backroad driving. I got 22 last time i filled up(that was because i was pretty much redlining it and smoking the back tires all day lol) NOTE: this is w/ 89. with 87 on the highway my dad was able to pull 26 (doing about 70-80).. as for winter, im not sure i havent had mine for a winter. and probably wont drive it in the winter

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

Actually I'm trying to get away from Subarus for the most part. I've had the worst service expirience with my dealership and there isnt any other close dealer. Plus STi's only get 20ish highway and they still fetch a high price even used and high miles. So a low miles GT for a good price really gets me thinking. I might just keep the Subi as a winter beater and get the GT for non snow driving.

as far as winter driving goes, my mustang slides around so bad in the rain i wouldnt even want to imagine driving it up north (and that is with 150lbs of audio stuff weighting down the rear end).

i believe if you look in the crash thread, you will see alot of snow in the background of the pics... there is a reason.

Whats gas mileage?

I got to drive in the snow for the first time with drag radials on while I was home in march. Lets say that didnt go over to well. I used my wifes lightly modded get to go to walmart to get salt (to get my car back in the driveway) and I rode sideways all the way there. Fun for me not for the wife or other drivers:D

i wouldnt agree with that. 6 cylinder mustangs dont really get that much better gas milage (if you can keep your foot out of the GT) and the only possible reason that they would be better on winter roads is because they have less power (again right foot control).

i would rephrase that and say that "youmight not want a rear wheel drive car."

lol one time i backed out of my driveway in about 2in of snow during a blizzard to try to get it in the garage. took me a half hour to get it back up my driveway and into my parking spot, i didnt even make a try for the garage. as long as you get the right tires it should do fine, my dad drives his m3 all winter with snow tires.

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

i have had 5 mustangs and lived in MO, where there can be bad snow 4" + atleast 3 times a year, and I still drove, cause it was my DD.

My best advice is get good snow tires in the winter put like 200 lbs over the rear axles. Give yourself plenty of driving time and avoid hills and inclines as much as possible...plan,plan,plan your route.
Most important get a good shovel and keep it in your trunk, I got stuck on a few inclines and as long as there is pavement under your car dig through it to the concrete/asphault in front of your rear tires for like 7-8 feet. That will give you enough room to get your speed up before you get on to snow again.

Hmm, so winter sounds like a possible no go. But I'm still interested in the best mileage people have gotten. I dont mind driving like an old lady to work and such to get the mileage. But I want the Mustang because like everyone else that owns one, I do like to put my foot to the floor from time to time. Plus they sound awsome and ride real nice!

Hang on to that Subaru!

I live in New England and my GT hibernates for the winter. ;)

MostSTI's are rated 17-24mpg which is pretty similar to mustangs yet people on here get 25-28mpg all the time. I understand the price part, but figured if you sell what you got, it would help with a down payment. You would probably be better off finding a good tuner shop than taking it to the dealership if your having problems with them. STI's are pretty popular so you shouldnt have that big a prob finding someone to work on it. Just some food for thought, good luck

I never said I liked the ride of a caddy...atleast the one I drove today had good responce and felt firm to the road. I dont mean its a cushy ride. Though its smoother then my Landcruiser that has leaves at all 4 corners.

I have a Legacy wagon auto...not much of a tuner...as I said, I'm getting out of the land of Subis and moving to a Mustang. Plus all the STi's around are modded and you know they've had the stuffing beaten out of them. The 2.5 turbo engine in the STi's arent known for lasting the usual 200K+ like N/A Subi's because of the higher boost they are running and the harder driving. Thats why a 39,000 mile Mustang sounds great.

On a totally unrelated note, why do the apostrophes multiply? When I first make then message it starts as one, then when it gets posted its 2 and then after I edit it theres 3 and so on...

yeah you're right... nobody beats the stuffing out of a mustang....

i agree with the STI suggestion... i love mustangs as much as anyone on here but driving a mustang in the snow is way to much trouble for you... either buy the GT and keep your subi or sell your subi and upgrade to an STI (they'll beat most GT's out there anyway!)

I get 18 mpg on average and you have to be careful driving in the winter. Try not to get caught in a snow storm, I did that once in my old v6 stang and it was hell.

haha...well i had a 02 auto that got consisntany 17mpg no matter how i drove it or what i did to it so... but then again I only paid $4000 for a 02 with 60k miles...

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

My car is a daily driver and I drive it all winter long. I had a lot of trouble the first year. It came with high performance summer tires that are rated n/a for winter. I could get stuck in an inch of snow on a slight incline. I switched to extreme performance all season tires and had no trouble at all last year in up to 4 inches of snow. If you want the Mustang go for it but you have to get the right tires and take it easy in the snow. Don't gun it in corners on snow and ice. The back end will try to come around on you even with traction control.

P.S. Most of the tire recommendations you see on these forums are high performance summer tires. Go to www.tirerack.com and check any recommendations out for yourself.

+1
Those that depend on traction control to save them are looking for trouble. I found that it reacted much slower than I could under icy conditions. I had the tuner permanently turn mine off.

But with a little weight in the back and good tires a Mustang doesn't really drive bad in light snow. I think it drives better than a two wheel drive pickup truck.

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

I'm in Miami, FL, so I've never seen snow in my car. I can speak to the gas mileage and I can say that I usually get around 15-16 mpg in city driving, and I've got 22 mpg on a road trip. Keep in mind that I have 4.30 rear gears, and I don't drive to conserve gas. . . I enjoy my car. If I mix in some highway with the city driving I get between 16 and 17 mpg.

MJH78 06-25-2008 12:48 PM

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

I get 16-17 in 100% city driving, lots of stop and go. I drive pretty modestly, coast when I can, etc. Highway the couple times ive done some short trips got about 24. Your completely screwed in snow, there's no doubt about that.

RE: Looking at a GT...best fuel economy and winter driving??

Yeah, it looks like we would keep the Subi to drive in the winter.

maxersloan- I never said they dont beat Mustangs. But I'd feel better buying a 40K Mustang then a 70K STi that cost more then the Mustang. Especially since Mustangs are driven hard on the pavement. But STis will be driven hard on gravel roads and such, which is much harder on the car. Either way I'm not getting another Subi at this point in time.
