Default 1st gear problem

Hey guys,

just purchased my first mustang today! It's a 2004 GT with a few slight mods done to it. Check the bottom for dealer pics. Anyways, they did upgrade the shifter on it, at least I think. Problem is when I shift into first. It acts like im not pushing the clutch, so it grinds a little. It doesn't do this all the time, but most of the time. If you do it really really slow, it won't do it. But it is getting annoying. Any suggestions? Perhaps the clutch is going out? Maybe the new shift has to be set right? Again, newbie here and idk. Please let me know any ideas. Thanks!

It had 46,553 miles so roughly 11.6k annually. I paid $15,750 and got a free fill up (with gas as high as it is, I was stoked!). I put $6,500 down and my payments will be roughly $250/mo.

Update on the gear grinding issue:

If you are at a dead stop and shift into second first, then first second (w00t), it does not grind. However, if the car is idling down and you try to down shift to first, it will not shift without grinding the crap outta the gears. Any help???

first is a tall gear, so its going to be hard for the syncros to get it in while moving, plus, you shouldnt need to down shift into first, you have brakes. I'd say 12mph< is ok, but over that, you should not be in first, unless you're winding it out through the gears.

That's just the thing, even under 12mph it grinds hard. Unless your at a dead stop and shift into second first, or shift really slow, it will grind...

Synco is dying. Its not completely toast yet but it is on its last leg!Just be easy on it and do what jim said to do use brakes and then when you are stopped shift from 2nd back to 1st. Only suggestion i have. My third gear did that a while back and i had to get my tranny rebuilt so good luck!

yup....its your syncros. i hope you purchased the extended warranty. the syncros in these trannys SUCK!! i had to get mine replaced around the 40k mark, due to my 3rd gear grinding. at first it would just grind every once in a while....but it got to where it would grind going into 3rd no matter what. i think the dealer charged around $1,600 to fix it. thank god i had the extended warranty....it only cost me $100.

If you just bought the car, even if you didn't get the warranty they should pay for most of it. With a good dealer, their name is on the line. I would take it back and if they have to redo it then they should pay atleast 50 %

Well guys I got good news and bad news. Bad news is, and yes you guys guessed it, syncros are going out. Good news is, I called the dealer and he said "hell you haven't even had the car 24 hours! I'll get it fixed!" So they are going to fix it for free. What sucks is I live in Amarillo and I purchased the car in Lubbock. They came and picked the car up today, but it's freaking two hours away. Either way, as long as it's fixed I'll be damn happy.
