Default air filter intake size

the molded plastic box that houses the air filter has an intake pipe that goes into the fender well so it will take in colder air. This pipe is not a constant diameter. It is smaller at the end furtherest away from the throtle body. Why? What if it was a constant(large) diameter?

If you're talking about the air silencer, then it explains itself, the smaller opening quiets the intake noise a little.

+1. Just remove it and plug in a K&N filter. It's a quick and easy way to add a couple of hp.

Yep, I did exactly this and when I rev my engine it's much louder, faster, and less restrictive. Some people say that removing the air silencer is not so good because then the filter intakes air around the engine bay which is much warmer. What you could do though is cut off half of the air silencer, so it sits just flush against the fenderwall and still takes in colder air.

Thanks for the input, no pun intended. A little more healthy noise on acceleration is welcome. How does it work to cut noise?
