1. A transmission cooler is a must. B&M xxx264 model is nice.
Nothing kills a tranny faster than heat.

2. Get the jMod done. Look here for everything you ever wanted to know about Ford trannys:

http://www.tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html#

3. Never Seafoam your car unless you are having troubles and have exhausted all other options.
Ever get an enema?
How did you like it? (hopefully you didn't [8D] )
Seafoam is an engine enema and I can assure you that your engine is not happy getting one unless it is truly and totally gunked up.

+100

You read my mind. Tranny cooler, and j mod and you still have plenty left over.

tranny cooler ~$65
jmod ~$60
K&n ~$50
pull snorkle ~free
pull slack off throtle cable ~$2
o/r x ~$170

Puts you a little over budget, but instead of the o/r x you can go for some appearance mods

grill delete ~$90
chin spoiler ~$75
cut stock anteane (sic) ~free
bumper inserts ~$10

Thanks guys for the advice.
I already have the grille delete and chin spoiler for whomever mentioned that.
Steeper gearing seems to be the obvious choice, however I'm already being eaten out of house and home by fuel costs as I commute 40 miles round trip each day!
I've done the snorkel mod and throttle cable mod, looks like the K&N filter should be next.
I'll keep an eye on the classifieds and see if anything worthwhile pops up.

Checking online, looks like 3.73s cost around $200 for parts, but that installation is beyond the less experienced. Installation is (again, checking online) typically $150-300. So is it safe to assume that this very good mod will run about $400? And what's involved in the speedo adjustment? (Tried to search, doesn't seem to be working.)

If one could get gears for about $400 installed, that seems pretty optimal..

You need to buy a speed cal or tuner. I was able to find a hypertech on ebay for about$70 to fix mine.

I put a BBK CAI on mine thought the throttle respose was beater a along with adding about 10miles to a tank of gas plus like it was said it looks cool.....Is it worth the money? ($170) NO but it has everything you need plus its easy to put on. just my .02

Nothings cheap any way so f**k it

I also have an ato and have done the throttle cable mod....now I did the throttle cable mod and my CAI all in the same night so the throttle response could have been mainly from the cable but what ever it was I enjoy it now
