Default diagnose engine noise

Went to pass a car from about 65mph and dropped to 4th and when rpm's got to around 3800-4000 I heard a slight "clanking" or "rattling" sound. I have some miles on my car and someone told me most likely a cam bearing..? I've heard of people having 'spun a bearing.' After it fails, is that what this is? What is the result in something like this? Motor lock up? I've been driving like a grandma since then. If this is the case, could the motor potentially last a bit longer?
Part of me wants it to go ahead and fail so it'll force me to complete my motor buildup.
Just looking for thoughts or suggestions

Do an oil change and use a screen when you drain it and check for any tell tail signs of damage like metal. But its hard to tell what its is not hearing it. Could be serious or something simple. Does it only happen when your in 4th or any gear?

a slight clanking/rattling as in like a spray can being shooken but at a much faster pace? Does the sound match engine speed? Could be something as simple as a heat shield rattling, or something as severe as the loss of a ********.[8D]

I think it makes the noise just when I'm up in the rpm's. I've heard it twice now. Doesn't matter the gear. Just when I'm getting on it. I've been trying to drive it pretty easy since then. I graduate pretty soon and Im curious if it'll hang on til then. I don't see any point in spending money on this motor and tearing it apart for any reason.

yea I thought it was bad gas at first. But I just have a feeling its not. It runs great otherwise. It does match engine speed.
