Aftermarket Steering Wheel

Has anybody put an aftermarket steering wheel on a "New Edge". If so, were you able to relocate the cruise control button so that they were still operational? Pics Please

I don't mind that you have a Early SN.... Tell me!? I hate my factory steering wheel but I love cruise control.

Ok Mike I will tell you. I wish I would have taken pictures when I did this [:@]
Here is the wheel

I lengthened the wires that contol the Cruise and routed them to the storage bin under my radio. I reused the plug so I could unplg the buttons when I didn't need the crusie

Yes it looks like crap but I only use it when I'm on the Highway. When I need it I just take the harness out of the Glove box and plug it in

Harness. I put Heat shrink wire wrap on the buttons and shrank it around the circuit board. Everything has been working fine for me.

There are 3 wires Lite blue, Black and Purple. Just tie all the wires of the same color into each other and you will be fine. The Purple wire also cares the Horn function so If you want your horn to still work you can wire that in also. I know I didn't get very detailed so if anyone has any question just ask and I might help you:D

RE: Aftermarket Steering Wheel

I have several wheels that I swap depending on my whim...

This is a Grant 714...

http://www.paladinmicro.com/images/SWheel640-01.jpg

Disconnect the battery and wait 30 minutes before mucking about with the air bag. There is a very large capacitor used as a batteryto make sure the air bag squib blows, you want to make sure that puppy is fully discharged before mucking about with the bag!!!

It's on a MOMO 4525 hub, I drilled and tapped a 5-bolt pattern in addition to the 6-bolt pattern so I could use Grant wheels as well. The clock spring was removed and I used the bottom of a 6" wedding cake pan for the cover, painted with black "crinkle" paint. There are two convenienly placed predrilled bosses that can be used to fasten the cover using self-tapping sheet metal screws.

A carbon brush holder machined from a 3/8" nylon bolt passes the horn ground to the MOMO hub's slip ring, the brush is a spare electric drill part I had kicking around.

The cruise control buttons were moved to a custom polished aluminum plate in the shifter surround:

http://www.paladinmicro.com/images/CCSwitches640-01.jpg

They are conveniently at hand and their functions easily remembered. The top two areSPDT momentary push buttons (Philmore 30-16074*), the bottom one is a SPST (Philmore 30-16062*). The top is on/off (on is pushing the side nearest the driver), the center switch in set(accel)/coast (set is also pressing the side nearest the driver), the bottom single throw switch is resume.

This is the wiring diagram:

The airbag controller runs a very small current through the squib at all times, this is how it monitors the presence and status of the air bag. The squib has a resistance of 2.3 Ohms, so the controller can be tricked into thinking the air bag is still there by placing a 2.3 Ohm resistor across the gray/orange and gray/white wires that were connected to the clockspring.

2.3 Ohm resistors are hard to come by, however 4.7 Ohms is a standard value. Usetwo 4.7 Ohm resistors in parallel and you'll get 2.35 Ohms which is close enough. The current is very low, so 1/2 Watt resistors are fine. If you have trouble finding the 4.7 Ohm resistors let me know, I had to buy 50 to get thetwo I needed;send mea dollar plus postage ($1.42 right now)and I can mail you a couple.

Remember todisconnect the battery for 30 minutes or more before messing with the air bag!

==================================
* - the Philmore switches are available from Minuteman Electronics for under $10 plus shipping.

I always wondered what those three buttons next to your shifter were. At first I thought it might be a nitrous swtich but I didnt think you would even consider spraying.

That is Awsome Cliff! I was upposed to something nice like that but I figured I would wait untill winter to clean up how mine looks.
So did those switch take the place of the factory switches? I love your setup. Is it ok if I copy you?

The switches and resistors duplicate the factory switch set. The LB/BK wire is the main input to the CC servo, and the switches and resistors provide differing voltages to that input depending on what switch is pressed. The servo interprets the different voltages as commands; it's pretty slick actually.I just posted a better wiring diagram that shows the switches open as they normally are. I also added info about tricking the airbag controller into thinking the airbag is still there, and a couple of cautions about messing with the airbag.

That looks great cliff. I wish I had the ingenuity to do stuff like that.
