Default RE: Timing

ORIGINAL: ajm

I put cams in mine a few weeks back and had a few ptv problems meaning I had to take take the cover off a total of about 5 times and set the timing and make adjustments MANY times. Here is the easiest way I can tell you...

1. Find TDC. The keyway at X oclock seemed to be bs for me. Different books, websites, write ups all said different stuff and none seemed to be correct. Put the front cover on and hold i it on by a few bolts which dont have to be torqued or anything, put the crank pulley on and turn it until the crank pulley mark lines up with the tdc mark. Other way to do it is with a tdc stop and degree wheel

2. Fold the chains in half, using an automatic punch, nail polish etc mark the end links

3. line up one mark on the mark on the crank, line up the mark on the other end with the marks/dots on your crank gear

do this for both sides and youre good to go
So your saying that the keyway is in adifferent positionon every crank? Ox man says that 12 o'clock keyway is the right way to do it.. Right now I am taking the cams out of the heads and turning the crank keyway to 12 and then lining up the chains with the different colored links on each end. I'm gonna do it that way then tell everybody what I did to get it right.

Thanks.

Fan-mother****ing-tastic write-up. If I wasn't selling my daily driver I would buy a cherry picker and dig in tomorrow.

Was that a compliment or are you saying this is a bad write-up...?

Anyways, everybody is saying to do different things and I can't turn the crank over with the cams out...(probably compression).

Ok, there seems to be 2 indents on each crank sproket (one on each side) in different locations. Does anybody know which one should be lined up with the mark on the chain? I can't afford to replace the valves and pistons after ptv.

The crank keyway is at 9 o'clock and the passenger side crank sproket has an indent at 135 degrees and 45 degrees. Driver's side is the same. Which one do I use?

Well, as far as I know, I may have it right. Just one thing... Is it possible to break a valve by turningthe crankwith a breaker bar? I turned a full revolution and then heard a loud crack.
Anybody know what could have caused the noise?
