a few good wacks from a rubber hammer should pop it loose.

Whacks to the shift handle or the base?

Screw the shift **** back on and hit that, just make sure it's either a rubber hammer or a dead blow so you don't mess up the ****. They tend to come off pretty hard, mine popped right off though.

reconnect the handle and pull from side to side to work it loose.

Yeah I just pulled as hard as I could and it popped off easy. Was not sure before if I could give it that much pressure.

Another question, should both the shift stops be equally screwed in? The top 1 3 5 stop is screwed in more than the bottom one on my pro 5.0. Everything seems to engage fine but I haven't driven it yet.
