Default Fuel Pump kicking the Bucket?

Key on, Engine off I have always heard my fuel pump actuate before firing the engine, and it has always had a distinct pitch and length.. However, lately the pitch and length have both changed, however only intermittently. I sometimes hear it as I always did, sometimes it's quiet. Short of hooking up a Fuel gauge and monitoring the pressure as I drive (I believe it should maintain 30 PSI? Correct me if I'm wrong) is there any way to verify my Pump?

Car is a 96GT.. Cold air, Stock FoMoCoReplacement intake (First cracked), Pypes High Flow cattedX and Magnaflow Catback. Everything else is basically stock. Plugs and wires were recently changed, car was Terra cleaned.
Any help is appreciated.

Bump:

Also, I forgot to mention.. The reasoning I have behind my question is this; Every so often, my car will feel as though it is weaker in the top end than it should be, almost as though I'm experiencing parasitic power loss from something. It doesn't happen constantly, only once in a while and usually it is most pronounced at WOT. It simply feels as though I'm loaded full up with passengers, however I'm driving alone.

if your pumps crapping out you should notice when you turn on ur car or after its been running for a long time when the pump starts to heat up.when my pump crapped out my rpms would go crazy and sometimes shut off.if its the pump one morning your going to try n turn your car on and its going to be dead.

i would def. check the fuel pressure to be sure. Cause I'm pretty sure you have to drop the tank to replace that, and yes the pressure should be at 30 psi.

Thanks very much for the responses, guys. Much appreciated.

I'm an apprenticing ford tech, so if needs be, I will drop the tank and replace the pump at work with help from Licensed techs. Not a problem.

No, it hasn't caused me any issues while driving, just 2 or so times it felt as though it was bogged down, however I know that no one would be able to feel this but me. I drive constantly and know her like the back of my hand (As I'm sure all of you do )
I'll be hooking up a fuel gauge this week most likely.
