Running to rich can hurt the engine by washing the cylinder walls and leading to premature piston, ring and cylinder wear that will make you lose compression and kill your power.

im having the same exact problem with my car! i just installed lt headers and a high flow catted midpipe and i had a catback already and my car was running like ok it could have used a tune cause it was running a little rich. But i drove to my gf college and on the way back it was running like ****. When i would stop it was idling fine but it was shaking like crazy. So idk what the hell to do. I think ill clean the egr first and check for vacums leaks. Oh and its running rich too you can smell it. Anyone else have any sugestions?

First of all, sounds like to me this "air fuel gauge" is not a wideband, but narrowband. If this is the case, it is completely useless anyway.

second, what numbers is the gauge showing? The car should run pretty rich being an FI car. Being rich at idle isn't necessarily a bad thing either, unless its so rich its causing the stumble problem.

Sounds like to me you need to hit a dyno with a wideband a/f ratio meter. Playing with the handheld and your in car a/f meter is a sure fire way to blow up an engine.
