i was just wondering if it was safe to switch to senthetic oil on my 01 gt with 86,000 miles on the clock...i believe its been running conventional oil all its life...thats what i have put in it, and i have changed the oil everything 3,000 miles, but ive only had the car for a year and a half, i would like to switch to royal purple full sentheic for the better horsepower, fuel economy and increase engine life...BUT i heard switching on a highmilage car might be a bad idea...and it 86k considered highmilage?? how many people did this change and did you run into any problems?...thanks for any input!

Some people say that because synthetic cleans out the engine more, it can dis lodge gunk that is blocking oil leaks. But I bought my car with 220,000 kms on it, and the old owner used royal purple and there were no problems. But I dont know when it was switched over. I put mobil 1 in it, juts because royal purple is over priced.

I say go for it! But be prepared for the cost of an oil change to go up.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. I bought it with 69k. I have 89k on it now. I use motorcraft oil. Keep everything original. I say just stick with what you were using before.

I also use Mobil 1, full syn, in my 04. I haven't had any oil-related problems to date. I usually can find a deal on the oil, Pep boy's usually will run a '5 quarts and a filter for $30' special, then, at worst, I buy 1 more quart, bringing my total to a whopping $36. As far as what's 'high-mileage', we're still finding the limits of a well-cared-for modular motor. I have friends with NPI ('96-'98 GT) cars that have rolled over 100, 150, 200k, with little, if anything, wrong with them. I'd say go for it.

You really are not to an old motor at 86k if it hasn't been raced too much, I'd say if you can then switch to synthetics they are better just don't switch back and remember you dont need to change it every 3k, thats one of the big reasons to run syn.
Many people still live by the idea getting around 100k is a motor ready to go, now for accessories yeah they might start to go, but with robotics building motors now instead of human hands motors are built with better tolerances, I'd say if taken care of 75-90k is your half life

Switching to synthetic will not hurt you ever. Regardless of the mileage or even car you have. You can have a Honda Civic with 200,000 miles and switch to synthetic. It's not going to hurt. The only problem is if you switch back from synthetic. NEVER do that unless you plan on replacing every gasket in your engine.

My 00' GT has 3,000 miles on it now and you are very right.. if you just take care of your car it will last 200,000+ miles. I baby my car all the time.. but opening up the throttle once in a while is okay. Everything else might need to get replaced tho.. (suspension especially)
