What kind of times does he run?
If you dont run a 1/4 mile, or dont plan on f/i, the go with the 4.30's. Get around a 3200 or so stall, with some good tires, like Mickey Thompson's, and you can maybe beat him to the finish in an 1/8. In a 1/4 he would be coming back hard. That's a good list, but maybe look into a PI swap as well.

well if i tear into the engine ill go with fox lake stage 2 heads and cams with pi intake. his best is a 9.20 in the 1/8 and where we live thats as good as it gets track wise and yea he kill me in the 1/4.

or i might just buy a 96 t/a converted to look like a 98-02 ws-6 with the lt1, 4.10's built rear end, aluminum driveshaft, lt headers, o/r y and lm1 6 speed for $3300. it needs a tranny wheels/tires and headlight module. its got 20,000 on the motor and its bored out. what do you think?

He runs 9.20's? Ouch my car did better than that stock! Do you have any times yourself? It would help if we new how much time you needed to shave off. It can vary a lot depending on the track so we can only guess. You being an auto stock would probably be around a 10 or so.
But all he needs is some d/r's and he will be running mid 8's!
You are an auto, might as well just slap some spray on it.

As it's been mentioned a couple times already, there are way too many variables to determine who's going to win this race.
My first instinct is to say that since "this is what im going to go with : insert giant list here:" is what you led the post off with, I'm going to guess you're about near stock.
You're gonna get KILLED from any speed (including 0) as a starting point to any speed greater than that which you started at.
Next, depending on where you live, perhaps that 9.2 is good, in which it's going to take a LOT of work to get your car on par with his 1/8th time.
Moving on: stay the F*** away from the LT1 you mentioned, it sounds like a project/something similar to a project that has been beaten the **** out of and someone elses work is not something you want to hassle yourself with.
My final analysis, you WISH that you could beat a LS1 that your buddy owns, but it's not going to happen anytime soon with the car that you own. Get over his **** talking, accept that your car is fun to drive/sounds good, and move along. He should have better things to do than beat up on cars that are nearly two seconds slower than his off the showroom floor.
