What gear (rear end) do I have?

I think he meant what did you splice to get power. But IDK, I really want a radar detector.

Unfortunately all of the one's I've seen(personally) beep all over the place for no reason. But I've never actually seen a V1 in action.

My Cobra works very nicely, with only an occasional false alarm. In fact I drive into and out of downtown Jacksonville 3-days a week and have never had to switch it to "city" mode to shut it up.

A nifty feature is that you can set a trigger RPM, below which the detector is disabled. I have that set to 1500 rpm, and as I am not the sort to drive through heavy traffic and residential neighborhoods outside of the posted limits it practically eliminates "falsies"...

Then there's also my philosophy that I'd rather have numerous false alarms than miss a real one...

That trigger feature is very cool!

How does It know what rpm you are at?

It detects the RFI glitches caused by the ignition in the power supply, and then (speculation here) uses a smart/fuzzy logic to decide which glitches are engine speed related.

They call it IntelliMute, to make the setting you select that particular setup sequence from the unit's programming menu and then after getting it to the "Press SET at desired RPMs" prompt you bring the engine up to the desired speed and press SET (duh!)...

It doesn't really know what the RPMs are, all it knows it that it will disable the detector until the particular glitch cycle it has focused on gets to the point where you pressed the SET button--actually quite ingenious.

The "glitch" produced by the coil's primaries, and bleed through from the secondaries, be it one, two, or eight coils, is sufficiently strong on any modern car to be easily detected and split out from the DC supply.

You can put an oscilloscope on the battery terminals (just about the world's largest capacitor) with AC coupling and it will be "in your face"!
