In a straight line I press the clutch in and than use the brakes.

Your rotors shouldn't warp from 90 unless you go too crazy on it. I can honestly say I have never warped a set of rotors even on a road course, but maybe I am just lucky.

Edit: Also I think I may have some magic Tach, Mine actually reads the right RPM and actually bounces at the right spot. But everyone i've see talk about it says they read high.

The side load on the pistons/rings is pretty extensive, but nothing that will cause harmful damage.

In ever car I have ever owned I have used the engine to help reduce speed (not normally at red line though) and that includes automatics when on a down hill slope. I've lived in the mountains and seen semi's with their brakes on fire on the long down hill slopes. I don't believe brake fade is as much of a problem with disc brakes as it was with drum brakes, but old driving techniques are hard to break. I down shift in corners and I don't mind at all running the motor up to 4-5k and then backing off the gas just to hear the pipes rumble. If I shift to the next higher gear, it was because it was time to shift not because I'm trying to engine brake at lower rpms. I usually trade cars when they get to 180,000+ miles and they have had no sign of engine damage. Actually, everything else but the motor was going bad.

I've blown up three motors and that is not how I broke them.

100mph in 3rd? damn....3rd in my car runs out about 86 **5300 rpm at 86** and 4th at 115.....ive had my car tached out one before, and i got on the brakes gradually to slow back down and they were just fine....youre not going to warp the rotors....they are made to slow the car down, theyre not speed rated at 65mph....push them too hard at that speed and youre gonna have way more problems than rotors though.... just let off the gas, doesnt matter what gear you are in, then lightly press the brakes until youre at a reasonable speed to get on them more

hai guyz, i drive 200mph on public rodez, i iz suuuch a badazz!! teehee!!

Engine braking for stopping is retarded. Now, engine braking to slow you down in situation where you may want/need to accelerate without completely stopping is a different story. (i.e. rush hour traffic).

For example, mountain roads you don't want to go heavy on the brakes because if you are heavy on the brakes the dynamics involved (Physics) will have all of the weight shifted to the front which means as you round the corner on that windy road, the shifted weight bias (over the front of the car) has the potential to make you spin out since the rear will be unloaded.

yea well i didnt shift at 5300, more like 5.9-6k, might have been around 97 in 3rd and 128ish in 4th (wanted to see what 4th tops out at) stock gears

autos automaticly engine brake at high speed, im basicly doing what they do (but not what they do if they leave OD off)

and yea derf00 im not talking about stopping to 0 just slowing down from like 100-60 or 130-75

how did you break them? i wanna know what not to do.

I think the easiest way to break a motor is redlinineg while the engine is still cold, ive never done this but it just seems like alot of people could have ****ed their motors this way

Like I said unless you have cams or engine work, theres no reason why you should be at 5900-6000rpm's

I mean what car do you have?

my car is a 2003 gt , stock

i guess i have gotten the habit because of the 1-2 shift the rpms climb so fast from 5200-6k, and if i shift at 6k i can chirp 2nd hard, if i shift lower i dont think i could.

if u shift at 6k arent you shifting into more power in the next gear? Ive gotta go to a track and experiment to see whats best

max hp is 5250 hp, max torque 4k, i guess im above the max torque but below the max hp when i shift at redline or 5900
