Default Engine braking at high speeds

Sometimes i hit 90-100 in 3rd and shift to 4th and apply brakes if needed, rpms are probably around 4k-4.5k and it slows me down pretty good. Does this cause anything harmful, should i be shifting to 5th for less rpms?

When i hit 130(only once) in 4th i shifted to 5th to slow, if i just released gas at 130 @6.1k rpm in 4th or 100 in 3rd i think thatd be hard on the transmission/drivetrain. What do you guys think/do to slow down without burning the brakes too much?

humm.... well to avoid glazing the brake pads/warping your rotors/over revving your engine i would suggest not taking it up to 90+, then braking wont be an issue.

If you are trying to engine brake, why are you shifting to a higher gear?

because im at redline at the current gear and i think releaseing the gas would be violent at 6k+ rpms, more violent than shifting to a higher gear and releaseing gas atleast from my experience, do you leave it in gear after redlineing to slow down?

Stop trying to act cool, it's annoying.

+1 if its legit I'll give you a good answer.

I wouldn't recommend using engine braking unless its through a corner so you don't have to shift. But in a quarter mile I would use your brakes, they are designed to slow you down, use them, Just get on them easy don't try to lock them up.

How am I trying to act cool? usually when I want to engine brake I would go one gear lower

But yeah I think I understand your question. I think it would be fine to release the gas. It's not like the engine is gonna rev up or something past the redline. Also i'm not sure what kind of car you have but if you have a 2V then it stops making power at 5250rpm's and when you are racing you shouldn't be shifting at higher than about 5500. The rev limiter is set to 6050 I think so I don't think your really going much past 6000.

Unless you have cams and/or tuned your car to have a higher rev limit

i think my revlimiter is 6250, and that guys post may have been aimed toward me (not sure though)

if i pushed clutch in and braked from 90 or 130 i do think my rotors would be warped as hell, imo engine braking is necessary

your tach's redline shows 6250 but the stock rev limiter is set to about 6020 or 6050.

Like defcon said just use the brakes but go easy on it. I go to a 1/8 mile track and after the 1/8 mile there are 2 turns, one comes pretty shortly and the other one is really far away. I always try to make it to the first exit turn but that requires me to brake pretty heavily. After the 1/8 I am usually in 3rd at about maybe 4500rpm's so I just leave it in gear and brake until I am slow enough to just put it to N and then cruise around the turn.

I can imagine that your track should have a much longer cool down length so I would just put it in N and go easy on the brakes. Or leave it in gear for a short while and then put it to N.
