I'd let it warm up some. It's not good to rev the **** out of a cold motor.

The '99 to '01 models have a recommended engine oil capacity of 5.0 qts, the '02 to '04 6.0 qts. I have seen a number of threads indicating that the oil pans are same (I have no direct knowledge of this, perhaps someone with such knowledge can verify) and Ford found through testing that the additional quart improved the overall quality and consistency of engine lubrication--hence the changed recommendation in 2002.

You can download the owner's manuals here and see the changed recommendation between '01 and '02.

If indeed the oil pans are the same then I believe it would be prudent for '99 to '01 owners to use 6.0 qts.

BTW & FWIW--in the '04/'04 factory shop manual the specified oil capacity for the 4.6L 2V is 6.25 qts +/- 0.25 qts.

The pans are identical. Ford lowered the recommended fill level to 5 qts in 1999 as a counter to reduce oil aeration. However, fill level never affected aeration in any measurable amount on these engines and the addition of an extra quart is highly needed on these OHC engines.

Interesting part about the "lowered fill level". I had never "gone back" and looked, sure enough the '96 and '97 manuals recommend 6.0 qts, the '98 through '01 5.0 qts, then back to 6.0 for '02 through '04.

I know that in increase (more correctly return) to the 6.0 qt fill was driven by Ford's own testing, and corroborated by others.

I drain my oil and put in anywhere between 5 and 5.5. Usually closer to the 5 level. I believe that always keeps it between the marks on the dipstick

Bottom line, when you drain the oil in the car, all of it does not come out. as long as you didnt start the car up and rev the **** out of it right away your fine.

However the marks on your dipstick represent the lower (5.0 qt) level, not the abandoned, then revitalised 6.0 qt recommendation...

I'd run 6.0 in a '99--my brother does in his 35th Anniversary coupe...
