MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS OFF!
Put the key in the car
Push the odometer button and hold it
Hold it!!
Turn your car to the accessory
Your gauges will restart and your buttons will light up, RELEASE THE BUTTON!
Let go of the button and click it, it will show you everything you wanna know...

Press and hold the odometer reset button put your key in and turn the key to the "on" position.
Hold the button until the gauges sweep across.
Then turn the car on and push the odometer button until you see the letters TAC and your rpm, You can also use this as a digital speedometer and some other stuff.
IIRC that is how you do it.
You beat me to it

I know it works on my 03 and I'm pretty sure it works on my 99 too, but I'll have to check on that.
+1 The only thing it may do is rezero your trip odometer, depending on which one (trip or total miles) you were looking at when you push and hold the button. And it does go back to normal when you turn the car off like ox said.

Everything stays fine...it goes into like a"test mode" where it displays info like fuel/oil/tach etc. It also goes through 10-12 "mode checks" that i have no idea what they mean, but you can read them all by pushing the reset button. there is also a mode where it resets the gauges and checks your low fuel and service soon bulbs (among others). Ive done this in 2 stangs and the first one automatically swept the gauges and went into the test mode. in my Cobra the word "test" pops up when you have the key "on" after you hold it for a while and you have to let go of the reset button when "test" is displayed, otherwise it will go straight to the odometer like normal.
