What do you mean by "shut off"? If you don't mean literally "shut off and had to be restarted" then I suspect you were experiencing the fact that the PCM shuts down the fuel injectors after about 4 seconds of closed throttle coasting in gear.

I had the same thing happen to me a few months ago. I was going down a hill and put it in neutral to coast a bit. When I let the clutch out the car turned off. I had to turn the key to re-start the car. It was really weird, but hasn't happened again since.

Shut off while driving...NO. Still rolling after shut off...Yes. Your vehicle will still roll even with it in gear and the engine is dead. If it happens again, do not throw it into park! Everyone freaks when this happens and thier reaction is to go to park in an auto. Just grab the e-brake and pull since your brakes will not work either.

Don't listen to the above your brakes still work when the car is off. Only grab the e-brake if it the last resort. Grabbing your ebrake could make the rear end come arond becasue only your rears lock up.
Again I will say this your Brakes DO work when your car is not running

you just have to mash them hard because these cars have hydroboost, so the brake booster runs off your power steering, so if the engine is off, the brakes work, but the brake booster does not assist you, so you have to push harder on the pedal

All cars with power brakes depend on some engine function for the power assist. Most cars use manifold vacuum, ours use hydraulic pressure from the p/s pump--either way when the engine stops so does the power-assist.

And yes, you will have to stand on that pedal if you need to stop fast or from high speed...

Depends on how good the rings and valves are. I had a '69 Ford E-300 van in which the valves leaked so badly that it would "chug" downhill on even a pretty slight incline without the parking brake on!

Lol! Imagine living on a slight hill and waking up to find your van down the street in the neighbors yard in the morning.

PS - I didn't know about that 4 sec injector shut down. I swear I learn something new from you everyday.
