was wondering where to start looking for this problem on my sons 96 GT conv. The speedometer works fine but no odometer or tripmeter

I had a 96GT convertible with the same problem. The odometer/tripmeter stopped working at around 90K miles. The odometer motor located inside the cluster wore out (normal problem I was told). I sent my cluster to an "approved" repair shop in Michigan, but there may be a local shop that can repair it depending on where you live. It cost about $100.00 plus shipping costs. The company was pretty good, total time from leaving my house to return was three days.

Just find out what gear you need and replace costed me 25 bucks and took me about 15 min to put it in. Just make sure you know what gear you need b4 you buy. The main drive gear on my odometer was shreaded and falling apart.

is it hard to get to the gears? Im guessing they are in the dash cluster?
