Exclamation HELP: Intial Engine Start-Up

GUYS! So last night i was preping my engine to start and when i went to go build oil pressure i got nothing! I took my spark plugs out and turned the engine (no more then 10 seconds each time, i tried about 4 times maybe) and i got no oil pressure. I had 6 quarts of oil in, then i checked my dip stick and it reads low (i got a new flexible dip stick from lokar). So i put little over a quart more in and still reading the same, im not gonna put anymore in cause i dont wanna put to much in ya know. I took out my oil sensor pressure sensor i think, it was next to the filter and turn the engine again and no oil cam out. So i was thinking it could be my pick up tube! When i installed the pick up tube, i read in the book to torque it to some really low torque i think like 15 in-lbs or something. But to torque it to that i bolted it fully to the main cap. (if ya built a engine before ya might know what i am talking about) but on the main bearing cap where there the mount for the pick up tube screws to you have that funky nut where one end screws onto the main cap bolt sticking out and the other end is where ya bolt the pick up tube to.. Does anyone know if it was suppose to be fully threaded to the main bearing cap?? When the pick up tube was just connected to the pump it hung lower then it did after i bolted it to the main bearing cap. ya know? ha if ya dont i could try to find some pictures to help me explain this. But if ya do know what im talking about and know if it was suppose to be fully threaded to the cap or not, let me know!!! thanks. Thats all i could think of, i think that maybe it is raised to high to pick up the oil?

If you guys can think of anything else that could be wrong then let me know!!!!!!! Thank you guys sooo much!

If i do find out the pick up tube is just to high then im going to take off that oil pan and lower that some. That is gonna really suck!!

bump again.. ha please can anyone help me out with this?? I was doing some reaearch and think it could be my oil pressure sending unit?? Could that be my problem? If i did install the pick up tube right then this would be my next guess..

If your saying that the pickup tube is lower then before it is possible that its so low that its hitting the bottom of the oil pan. Not allowing the oil to be pumped. But theres really now way to install the pickup tube wrong unless it was damaged somehow. since it bolts to the pump and the support braket bolts to the stud on the main bearing cap bolt like you said. I would have someone crank it again and take the oil cap off and see if you see oil lubricating the valvetrain. Also might be a good idea to take the oil filter off and fill it with oil and reinstall. This will also help prime the engine if you haven't done so already.

its gonna take more cranking than that to build oil pressure. took about 30 seconds on my buddys fox body. if you look around on the internet ive heard of people using a sprayer type method on modulars as there really isnt any other way to prime a modular pump other than cranking. i say buy another oil press. sending unit (should be done with every engine build) and give it another try.

I know it is not too low since i screwed it all the way that i could to the stud on the mauin bearing cap. I was afraid i had it to highh, but thanks for letting me know that thats not my problem. Ill take off the oil filter and get a new one and fill that with oil.

oil press. (oil pressure). any parts store has it, oil pressure sending unit. its on the filter housing, easy to get to just put one on the other day. it has a plug with only one wire on it.

The pickup stud the screws on to the main bolt has a torque rating so it has to be screwed all the way on.

Is the oil pump new? If so did you pour oil into it during the build up?

my pickup tube went on with no problem, the nut that tightens down onto the main bolt should be threaded all the way on and torqued down. I agree with one of the previous posts- you will need to crank a little longer than that. you should have used assembly lube when you built the engine, it wont hurt to crank it a little longer.

I did an older pushrod build last month and I primed the pump with a drill. I went through both batteries on my 14.4v Dewalt and still had no pressure on the guage. I slapped everything together and started cranking it. It took about 20 seconds of constant cranking before the oil pressure acted like it was on Viagra....lol You just need to keep on cranking away. Your probably gonna need to put a battery charger on it and let it sit overnight because it may take that long. I would rather turn a dry engine over and over by the key than have it fire and not get any oil pressure. Just don't sit there for 5 solid minutes and crank as you will eventually begin to build up heat.
