Default 2v Valvetrain rattle

anybody ever hear of the hydraulic lash adjusters going out? I have an annoying valvetrain rattle going on right now. It starts in the 2000 RPM range and goes through out. It also speeds up with the RPM's. I'm about to order replacement parts and just wondering if it's the lash adjusters or maybe the roller rockers.

anyone? Also, I'm thinking I can replace these parts without removing the heads, can that be done?

ok, let's add a little fuel to the fire here

with a stethoscope
- it can be heard from both valve covers, at points closest to the firewall.
- It can not be heard from the oil pan

without a stethoscope
- it can be heard from the passenger compartment rather loudly
- it does it the most under load and occasionally when in neutral and rev it.
