Default Whats the deal with breaking in gears?

Ok so I just had FRPP 3.73's installed and got it back from the shop yesterday. I actually really like the way it drives even normally, but I have resisted the temptation to punch it yet and really try them out.

I heard so many things about how to break in gears like:

1. You don't need to

2. Go easy on them for the first 500 miles

3. Drive them for a while and heat them up and let it cool down and repeat 3 times

4. Do the above 2 and also don't stay at a constant speed for an extended period of time

Does anyone know what the true deal is?

So far I've driven my car 60 miles/1 hour back home on the freeway from the shop (I figured this aint the best thing to do but I really had no choice) and then I've driven it for a while and let it cool down again. Then today I did 2 heat cycles driving them for a while and then letting them cool down and I am about to do it again. I've put about 110 miles on my car so far since driving it off the shop.

I am trying hard to resist the temptations lol but I really don't want to wait 500 miles lol

Thanks,
Brandon

the manufacturers of the gears will say 200 miles, 400 500ect. i've heard from many sources heat the gears up and cool down completly 6 times. i would do the latter with gentle driving and keep out of wot untill you put 200 miles on the gearset. with our reletivly weak ratios we don't really need the extended break-in. but since those are ford gears(the same gears put in factory cars) i would just say rip it. i don't think they have time to heat cycle the rear end at the mustang plant.

Three heat cycles of 50 miles is what I was recommended by a pro drivetrain shop here.

3 heat cycles andv your good to go. most say that's a good safe measure to go by. that was the extent of my breaking in and then let'er rip.

I left the parking lot sideways, after I was told to put about 500 miles on them before doing that. That was 3 years ago and no problems.

Hmm thanks guys. I guess I'm just gonna give it one more heat cycle and then give it a go. Do you think it's a good idea to progressively break them in? as in next time try shifting at higher rpms...and then doing so faster...and then try launching with a bit of tire spin and then going all out with 5500rpm shifts and tire churp before ever taking it to the track and doing full burnouts and etc etc?

And also can anyone tell me what gear whine sounds like? I'm trying to figure out whether I have that or not...So far I don't seem to hear anything out of the ordinary so i'm just trying to figure out whether or not gear whine is like one of those things that you're either gonna get it obviously or you don't at all?

I also think I'm hearing something when I am reversing at low speeds but i'm not 100% if it's the gears...It kinda sounds like interior rattle coming from somewhere at the back but I don't recall having it before the install.

Hmm... this too has confused me but what do you say for stock cars? They have new gears and you can romp on it after a 25 mile engine break in period...

Thats the thing lol....You have to break in a new car too but 25 miles is not enough for that...
