Question 4v heads on 99 GT block....

Ok here is my problem!!! I just bought a 97 Cobra with 80k on it. The kid before me drove it into a large puddle and hydro locked it. SO I have ALL the cobra parts since its complete. Now I have been offered a 99 GT short block very cheap! I no the crank is 8 bolt , like my cobra... Thanks for any ansers!

Will there be a problem revving that motor as high as the cobra does stock?

Will my comp raise?

Are the rods and pistons the same?

I'm planning on boosting the motor once I drive it a couple hundered miles to be sure its ok. (turbo)

I HAVE SEARCHED THIS FORUM AND DID NOT FIND MY ANSERS SORRY IF ITS A REPOST! PLEASE ADVISE ME TO THE PROPER LINKS.

Aside from the difficulties of the swap itself, I wouldnt want to rev a 2v shortblock in the rev ranges needed to make power with 97 cobra heads. It might last a while, but anything above say 6k on a gt bottom end is asking for trouble. Some might debate it, but thats my opinion. And if youre planning on boosting youre really going to need more than a 2v bottom end. I mean seeing the power numbers turbo 4vs make, it would almost be a waste to do it on that bottom end.

Just my opinion.

Well, if you have all the parts of the cobra engine to use, you can do it very easily. All you have to do is swap the parts over. The only thing I can think of is I don't believe the pistons are the same, otherwise if you plan on forging in the future, you'd want a new block anyways if you're going to go over 600hp. At least that is what I've read, 600hp is pushing a GT block. You might as well just get a used forged shortblock or a new one if you have the money.

actually i believe the coolant passages are different, you would be better off swapping the whole motor.

i dont think thats true. if you look at after market blocks the will work with 2v and 4v heads. you would just have to swap over the timing cover, timing chain/guides. id see if the crank from the cobra is still good and just buy some forged pistons and connecting rods and you will have a healthy short block.

Yeah maybe I check tommorow night and see if the crank is good. I wanna make some good power with this car guys! I was just looking at forged pistons and rods and there not that much. So just go with the gt block and forged inside! I guess.... Thanks

is there anything wrong with the stock cobra block? if not then use that and just replace the pistons and rods with forged ones. the aluminum WAP block that the cobra came with is good up to 900+hp plus it weighs 70lbs. less than the cast iron GT block. the blocks are the same casting just different material so yes if you did want to go with the GT block it would all bolt up just fine.
