Default heater blowing cold?

What would cause my car to blow hot while im driving but when i come to a stop start blowing cold? I'm replacing the heater core today cause it started smelling like antifreeze when i turn on the heat. I don't think that would cause the cold air but they did both start at about the same time.

thanks

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open

Not to steal the thread, but I'm having a very similar problem. The conditioned air comes out hot for a bit then gets cool and cycles back to hot again. Also, there is a bit of resistance when trying to turn my temperature selection **** on the hot air side. Any ideas what could be causing this? If it is my thermostat stuck open, what would that mean and how do I go about fixing it?

sounds like the a/c vent block that closes when the a/c system is not on is no longer closing
