Shot Transmission
Im driving a 98 gt (automatic). My transmission is messed up so I was thinking about going with an aftermarket transmission but my uncle convinced me to stick with stock. There is a guy thats offering to repair my current transmission (99500 miles) for $1200 with a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. What do you guys think??

That's not a bad price but without knowing whether the guy is any good or will do a good job,any info I can give is useless.
Is the shop clean?
You don't trust something as complicated as an auto tranny to a shop that looks like a rummage sale.
Are there other cars at the shop of equal or greater value than yours?
If the only cars they work on are older cars of lesser value, will yours be a learning experience for them?
How long has the shop been in buisness?
A new shop or a new guy in town may be just fine but then again there's that learning experience again.
A warranty is only as good as the shop that wrote it.If they are out of buisness it ain't going to be any good.
I like the idea of rebuilding the stock tranny but beware,a bad shop or a crappy rebuild will be a royal PITA.Ask to see the bad parts, not so much to make sure things are being replaced but to see just what went wrong in the first place.A good shop will be happy to show you their work. They should even be proud of it! The shop I use is! They almost make you go back and look at how pretty the new innards look compared to the old parts.
