i couldnt even tell you how many times ive tried to be ripped off by a dealer. the classic, "this part usually runs for about $220, but today i can cut you a deal and its yours for $140." the part (clutch cable) in my example acutally cost under $100. dealers are rats!

you guys are forgetting something an 02 is WAY out of factory warranty. He probably has an extended warranty. Read the fine print. The dealership is only bound to what the warranty states is covered. The reason it took the shop 2 weeks to get the ball rolling is because they inspected it (the engine), called the warranty company, gave them the news, and the warranty company sent it's own inspector to review the findings... thus the slow process.
Most extended warranties only give a provision to replace a failed part with one of equal functionality. If this "new" motor only has 20K miles on it and his had even 10K more (30K) he's still ahead on paper. Being an 02 I'm guessing he had closer to 40 or even 50K or more on the original motor.

...got the car back today.
new motor with 20k miles on it. they reused the motor mounts, pullies, wiring harness and intake manifold.
clutch and shifter feel a tad more loose but the e-brake handle is tighter. other than that it is great. feels so good to shift again
