Everyone recommends what they have, which is good because it means that every aftermarket shifter is much better than the stock shifter, but that leaves one problem: identifying which shifter is "the best", or at least which shifter is best suited "for me". Does anyone have any experience with more than one shifter? If so, please offer your commentary.

Hey guys, I have an '01 Cobra with a Steeda TriAx for it. TR-3650 tranny.
Shifter is great, nice tight shifts... but I bought the car slighty used and when shes cold I feel a small "pickup" into second.
Switching to the Steeda makes me feel it more... but Im good once she warms up its great. Its cold up where I am at ... but it seems that my tranny is making a lot of gear whine over the past few months. I know people said to expect it... but what I get is strange. I get whine more in 1 and 3rd, less in second and 4th / 5th are quiet as can be.
Did the installation myself, very fast and simple. Set the stops as per the instructions, leaving a 10-15 thou gap in the stops.
Anyone with the shifter / tranny combo seeing this? It can be pretty loud, especially when the car isn't 100 percent warmed up.
Im guessing its in the transmission because thats where the sound is coming from, i get the whine and when its really not warmed up it almost sounds like a rough bearing of some sort. When its warm, shes pretty good? Not a big tranny guy. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks for the help in advance, im new here and this is my first post.

I have the Pro 5.0 and had one on my 86 also. Well established company, you can't go wrong. MGW seems to be very popular too

Holy old post!!!!

The 1-2 syncro of the 3650 is the problem. The material is to soft to handle the load and wears out early in the tranny's life. This is a common problem with all 3650 till about late '04. Ford has recommended lowering the fluid level of the tranny to correct the issue, but it's only a bandaid. You may have to push but ford has a reapir kit out to rebuild the tranny to address the issue. When they rebuilt the tranny on my '03 they found 4th was damaged too! My tranny started the cold lock out and hard shifts after about 2500 miles, took another 15k before they had a fix and then trying to get them to do it.

Ohhh... you don't need the stops on a 3650 for the shifter. The tranny has internal stops and if the external stops are set incorrectly you can damge the tranny. I never installed mine and I never had a problem, had an MGW, which is still up for sale.....

The Steeda and Pro 5.0 are both nicely made, refined re-designs, of the OEM shifter--the MGW is a nearly completely re-engineered unit, and the MGW operating lever is made with a resilient bonded core (with a through-bolt) that does reduce sound and heat transfer to some extent (you'll still hear the 3650 mainshaft though, in neutral with the clutch released). I drove cars with all three and settled on the MGW...
