I've not yet decided what I will do if and when I need a new motor, but I've been considering dropping in a newer 3-v motor from a salvage yard. You should be able to get a low mileage motor fairly cheap. I've had used motors put in before and have always had good luck with them. (I don't use e-bay.) You can buy a kit to adapt the 3-v to our cars and you use your stock wiring harness and computer. Unless you can rebuild the motor yourself, you are not going to get a forged motor for $2,000.

Edit: The 3-v heads flow almost as good as the 4-v and according to Wikipedia Ford no longer makes a 4.6 4-v motor.

What should I be concerned about when buying a used engine like this and would it even be a good idea at all to pick an engine like this up?

Also if I do pickup a used engine what should I do to it following the install?
I popped my motor 2 months ago, so I bought a new Cobra shortblock, forged crank, pistons and H rods. I used 2 valve heads though. I bought the shortblock from Crazy horse Racing, Chris had it sitting in a pallet still in its shrinkwrap from 2004. The whole job cost me $7000 out the door, including labor and the tune, which was a pain in the ***. With the smaller pulley I am up to 470 HP, up from 411. The only suck job was it took him 2 months to get the job done. I wonder if he will be in business much longer, since he took that new job as Director at Atco. Don't buy a used motor, you can pick up a new 4.6 installed for $3500-$3700 installed.
