Default Brake Rotor Resurface?

Hi All,
I need to get my brake rotors resurfaced. The Shop Manual says that this must be done on the car. Is that true? I usually take rotors to a machine shop, but I wanted to hear your thoughts.

Also, does anyone know of a good machine shop in MD or Northern VA. I live in Silver Spring.

Thanks

First, you have to measure the rotors to make sure they arent below spec. And if they are within 4 thousands of min-machine thickness, then you're good. You dont need a machine shop to do your rotors, any automotive shop should have a break lathe.

when i did my pads a couple months ago i took all 4 up to o'rileys to get them turned and they wouldnt do them. they told me that according to there data base the rotors for a mustang are not ment to be turned just replaced. the fronts they could take off.001 for 15.00 a rotor but the rears they are throw aways.

Well they are ****in dumb.. You can machine Mustang rotors, would you like me to post specs for ya? They are just tryin to sell you new parts. Some rotors may be unturnable, even if they are "in spec" but thats because of how the pad wears into the rotor. Like if its grooved to deep to has rust spots on the backside..

i know that the fronts can be turned but the backs are not ment to be and there only 38.00 each but after spending almost 200.00 on hawk pads i just took 80 grit and sanded the rotors and put them back on, 5000 miles later they are working just fine. it just really pissed me off that i took the rotors off and drove 45 mins to get them turned and had some fu*king hick tell me that i didnt know what i was talking about.

Well apparently you're still a little in the gray on that... You can machine the rear rotors as well. I work at Ford, and we always try to machine rotors before selling new ones. Front + rear

autozones front rotors are 53.99 each and the rears are 32.99. after i spent 200.00 on new pads i didnt have an extra 175.00 for new rotors and mine were still in good shape. so look at it like this most shops charge 10-15 a rotor to turn so would you want to spend 40-60 to resurfice or 175.00 for new rotors???

Resurface - $12 each
New - $26 to $50 each

I have not been able to find a decent set of new rotors for the price of machining.
