crank gear hitting timing cover...

crank gear hitting timing cover...
Today I went to install the timing cover on the motor for the build, however when I put on the sensor gear, (with the side that says "rear" facing towards the motor) when I go to put on the timing cover, the gear seems to hit the timing cover, ... The crank gears for the cam is an OEM ford piece that came with the timing kit from MMR. There seems to be a collar on the front of the gear(the chain gear) which puts the other sprocket too far forward, however If I were to flip this around, it would put the timing marks toward the motor..Any ideas? Didnt see much when I tried some searching...

Prior to 2001 Ford used a "thin" (1.000") crank sprocket and a "thick" (0.200") sintered metal sensor wheel. Sometime in 2001 a change was made to a "thick" (1.180") sprocket and a "thin" (0.120") stamped metal sensor wheel.
Here they are side-by-side:
Sound to me as though you have a mis-matched set...

My old cam chain gears were 2 pieces.. I wonder where I can find the thin crank sensor gear? Or do I need to use the thin cam chain gear because I have a windsor timing covwer? i GUESS I could just use the old cam chain gears.

CliffyK identified the most likely cause. mismatched set.

There were 4.6 Windsor engines in Mustangs in 2000 and I think also in '99. It had a cast instead of aluminum block and an 8 bolt crankshaft instead of 6. If he has timing gears from a romeo and a timing cover from a Windsor it is not going to work. Dunno why I didn't think of that earlier. Also the heads were slightly different in that there were a few less threads on the spark plug holes (the original culprit of shooting them out) and the bolts from the timing cover to the head were 10mm instead of 8mm.

While I'm thinking about it the valve covers were also different because of the "brackets" that were used to mount the camshafts. While the Windsor motors used simple caps the Romeo engines used these. Mustangs075.jpg&w=1024&h=768&ei=DY3PUKU80bvQAfG7gegC&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1066&vpy=279&dur=3675&hovh=

Im using bolt on gears for the aftermarket cams, and with the gear, the crank cam chain gear is now one piece that came in the kit.
Found I can get the slimmer trigger wheel at the dealership for $30. Thanks guys!
Windsors had different valve covers, and timing cover bolts. and the cam caps were different,
however EVEN ROMEO blocks are cast.. not aluminum..

Old crank gears/new chain

My old crank gears are 2pc as well NO COLLAR EXTENTION, 1999 4.6L Bought a timing chain set (Windsor "6" VIN) The new set came with its crank gears that HAD a collar extention and the 2 gears were one piece design... it broke my timing cover, I fixed that and put the old original 2 separate crank gears back on along with the new chains, tensioners and guides. Now the 2 chains are hitting each other at the crank gear location. Chains have crashed, in turn they chain sawed into the new guides and the shavings stopped up the oil pickup tube filter. My question to anyone is where on earth can I get a timing set that has new 2 pc crank gears separate with (no collar extentions).Just want to put the same stuff in that came out and NOT have the chains crash each other! Thank you in advance for constructive advice! Please save any other comments about brains and abilities...I gave already chastized myself quite a bit for this issue!
