Default Throw out bearing

Just discovered that my throw out bearing will need to be replaced soon. I was kind of surprised considering that the car has under 40k. Has anyone else experienced this? I know replacing it involves pulling the tranny, which goes way past my level of expertise.

Mine sometimes makes a sort of hissing noise when my foot is off the clutch pedal, once I just lightly set my foot on the pedal it stops..

i had the same problem only at 10,000 miles. it makes a winey sound when you press the clutch in. i took it in and they replaced it for free. but also replaced the clutch, pilot bearing and my freakin clutch quadrant again. If replacing it and still have the self adjusting clutch quadrant i would replace it with an after market one that is not self adjusting but manual. I beleive this was its demise as it would allow the clutch to be half way in at all times. they have an updated one now (throw out bearing) available also. so see if it would be a recall first before doing it your self.

sorta a bad name for those things eh? you really do just have to throw them out and get new ones with are cars. oh well good luck.

Hey bud, good timing! I have a '96 and I had to replace my throwout bearing not too long ago. It's not hard at all, just time consuming. Your best bet is to buy a Haynes manual and do it yourself, because itcan be done with basic hand tools. The bearing itself costs about $35 at Autozone or any other auto parts store. They will ask you if your transmission is German, and it doesn't matter, just get a self-aligning throwout bearing. The one I bought came with lube already on the bearing, but just in case buy some high-temperature grease.

If you have any questions ask, I know the process like the back of my hand. You'll pay too much for a shop to do it, and it's really easy to do, just takes a day or 2 to get it done.

Let me know, I'll even scan the pics in the Haynes manual and post them and give a step-by-step description of how to do it if you want to try it yourself. You'd be surprised how easy it really is. Once you try it, you'll kick yourself for even considering letting a shop do it and paying them your hard-earned money! Spend that few hundred bucks on gears or CIA or exhuast or something useful.
