02 gt 4.6 knocking/ticking noise
Hey Guys,
This car is driving me crazy. But I hope to narrow it down to a couple issues. Right now the car runs OK, but there is a knocking/ticking noise coming from the engine. Seems like it went away and came back today. But the car is definately not 100% and seems to rev slow after 3k.
2002 GT 120k
Stock except intake and flowmasters. Daily Driver.
The car was making a ticking noise coming from the passenger valve cover. It was a ticking noise you could hear outside the car. Especially louder if you removed the oil cap. That weekend the car blew out the #4 sparkplug. Took to the FORD dealership and had it replaced.
After the repair, they said the passenger valve guides need to be replaced. So I bought the clowers? complete timing set. I took everything off and marked both cam positions with chalk and timing chains. Replaced the chains, tensioners, and guides. I did not have the cam positioning tool, but it seemed very close to were I marked it origionally. THe worst could be a tooth out either way. (Wished I bought the cam tool).
Buttoned it all back up and now its backing a noise from the passenger side, or maybe internally on the passenger side. I used a shop broom handle and held it against the front engine cover and hear the ticking. It was not always constant at idle, and seems to go away when you rev it up. I could here a ticking through the exhaust.
#1 I have used royal purple for last 3 changes and put 5w20w blended reccomended by ford.
Could I get one tooth out either way when I replaced the timing chain and it's causing this ticking noise because the timing is retared on the passenger bank? THis would cause the car to fall on its face after 3k.
BAD: COuld this be a spun bearing or wrist pin?
I havent tested by unplugging each injector.
RIght now I'm either going to break it back down and buy the positioning tool, or buy a rebuild kit. UNless not using royal purple caused this. Then I would switch back or to a thinner oil.

If you installed the cams one tooth off then you need to save for a new engine. From the sound of it you did set the timing wrong and smacked the valves which are now bent (low power at higher rpm) and dented the pistons.
There is no need for an overpriced cam positioning tool. Those are only for the auto school drop outs that ford hires to work at the dealers.

So if I was off one tooth either way on the engine, it may have bent a valve?
I rotated the crank with a ratchet 2-3 times and didn't feel any interference before I started it up.
Seems like knocking is coming from under the intake.

Ok,
So I I can take the head off the car tomorrow and see if the piston has been damaged right? After I get the valve cover off, you take off the plastic brace/girdle then take off the head.
If its my fault, then I'm going to pull the engine and build it back right.
