Default air filter mesh screen

my 01 gt is stock and i replaced the air filter and i removed the mesh screen before the mass air meter and now my car is giving me a hesitation when i come off the clutch in 1st gear. is this because of the screen i removed or something else?

Most likely, removing the screen is not the issue. If you replaced the filter with something like a K&N drop in, then possibly some oil residue is on the sensor. Clean it off with a q-tip and alcohol. If the motor "hesitates" when parked, try taking out the filter and see if that causes a change. Don't go out on the road without the filter, just check for response. Is it only 1st gear where she stumbles?

Yes it is likely because of the removing the screen--the screen is there to straighten air flow through the MAF so that the sampled portion of the flow is more representative of the entire flow.

It does not offer any significant restriction --here's a analysis I did of it's size versus the MAF and various TBs...

I second that notion.

I took the screen out when I put a Intake on my mach1. The car would hesitate and actually stall out. I put the screen back in and the car ran great!

I took my screen out four years ago and have no issues. I got that piece of advice on this forum. This screen has a thickness of about 1.5 mm. Physically, it is not large enough to "straighten out" airflow. Additionally, the airflow on a stock air box IS straight prior to the screen for all intents and purposes.

Suddenly, I am remembering why I stopped coming back to this forum.

On my Fox it wouldn't idle right but was fine when the screen was put back on, on the 02 she runs fine without the screen.
