Default Odometer/Tripmeter

Recently bought a 98 GT. The odometer/tripmeter do not work but the speedo does. The previous owner sent a speed sensor with the vehicle. I searched the topic on here and it seems that this is a typical problem. From researching this site the issue is usually a broken gear and not the sensor. My question is should I still replace the sensor first to see if that fixes the problem? If the sensor was out then the speedo wouldn't work either, right? Any info would be helpful

There is no model year or production split that will determine if the color of the worm gear installed in your vehicle is white or black without first removing and inspecting your original worm gear. The time it takes to remove the cluster and open to inspect is roughly five to ten minutes time. Instructions: Ford Mustang Odometer Repair How To
