Before they invented multigrade oil, we ran 30w in the summer and 10w in the winter. 5w oil was considered breakin oil. One winter I didn't get the oil changed fast enough. The starter could barely turn over the motor.

We also thought that using only 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles was good. I can't remember the last time I had to add oil between oil changes.

what does the book call for? 5w 20 10w30 or 5w30? I just did an oil change with 5w 30

99 mustang with the 4.6 calls for 5w30 weight oil all year long. in 2001 all the modulars and most of the other engines switched to 5w20. you got the right oil.

ford actually backed the 5w20 to anything newer then 96 IIRC.

i ran my 6er with 5w30 and a motorcraft filter, i used everything from cam 2 dino oil to amsoil synthetic (yes switched back and forth with no problems)

i run shell rotella or something like that now per my oil guys recomendation (or maybe it was just that i use dino oil anyways and after half an hour of him going on on how he did it for 45 years i zoned out )
