Question Throwout Bearing Replacement

I am usually in the classic Mustangs area.

My friend has a 2003 Mustang GT. The throwout bearing is shot. I have never pulled a transmission on a newer Mustang. What all is entailled in replacing it?

This is what I think would have to be done.

Disconnect O2 sensors, and drop the H pipe. Isn't there a flange so the mufflers could stay in place?

Remove driveshaft

Are there trans fluid lines like an automatic has that need to be disconnected?

Disonnect backup light and other sensors on the trans.

Drop the transmission out.

I have another question. How much room is needed to get the transmission out? I have ramps. Will this give enough clearance, or does the car really need to be on a lift?

The reason I ask is that the place he has to work on it really isn't setup for working on cars. Its just in his driveway.

What tools will be required? I will have be bring whatever tools are needed, since he doesn't have any tools.

How much should it cost for a shop to do this? He was quoted 600-800 dollars.

You basically got it. You can get it out using jackstands, but that leaves almost no room to work at all. If you have access to a lift it will make your life a whole lot easier. I forget what size bolts hold the transmission on though. There are no transmission fluid lines to worry about. And also how many miles on the car? If it is getting up there I would maybe tell him to consider doing the clutch and all while it is all apart so you can save a hassle later on down the road.

Thanks for the tip about the lift. That was the same thing I was thinking.

The car only has about 45k miles on it. I'm not sure how he has been treating the clutch though.

I suggested that he replace the clutch anyways to avoid having to basically redo the whole job again in the future.

I wish I had access to a lift. I do have a friend that works for a local Nissan dealer as a mechanic. He has said the he can sometimes use the shop for his own personal stuff when time allows. I'll have to ask him if he wants to help us and let us use one of the lifts there.

If you can use the lift you'll probably be done in 2 hours if you know what your doing and all. Air tools would help too.

do you need a puller to get the tob out? I am about to do the same thing to mine. My buddy just got a lift installed in his garage (lucky sob) so he said i can use it. If its just dropping exhaust, driveshaft, trans, then it just comes right out that sounds pretty easy. Someone was telling me that i have to remove the clutch though? any info helps. (sorry if im jackin the thread figured you wouldnt mind some more info)

The TOB is on the input shaft of the tranny. No puller is needed, and it should just slide right off. The clutch does not need to come out.
