Anything in the Air Intake Tract other than air = Restriction
It's just common sense.. Whether it be .005hp or 50hp, a gain is a gain, and it's all relative to what else you have done.. (i.e. a free mod, probably won't free up much hp)

95 Eagle Talon TSi AWD - 12.7 @ 103mph (R.I.P.)

There was an article in MM & FF that did a test on removing the air silencer and HP was reduced by 2. Get a CAI. A little gain is alot better than a little loss.

If your air filter is filthy then having the silencer out probably isn't gonna do much. Clean your air filter, or better still get a K&N filter they flow a lot more air than stock paper filter and are cleanable. Hey stick the silencer back in if you want, and see if you notice any loss of perfomance/sound.
Just last week I stuck in a K&N filter and, while I was there I pulled off the silencer. I don't think I can actually "feel" any of the extra 1-3 horsepower increase but it sounds better. And like the others said, every little bit adds up.
I was gonna get the full K&N CAI kit but,, well I don't get it.. The factory air pipe looks pretty much just like what an aftermarket CAI pipe looks like, why would swapping out the air tube help?
