Default Steering has some play

I recently installed a UPR tubular k-member with coilover setup w/ cc plates on my 04 GT, and got an alignment done. The car drives straight but i have noticed that there is some play in the steering wheel. I can move it side to side about 2-3 inches with out the steering reacting. I have checked the tie rod ball joints while up on jacks and there is no play. I am just wondering what else I should look at to take the slop out of the steering.

Do you have headers on your car? Your rag joint in your steering stem probably needs to be replaced

mine does this a little too, maybe i should check mine out as well... I mean not a few inches, but it does it at higher speeds... it will start going to the right or left a little without any movement from the wheel...

What are signs that the rag joint is failing / how do i check to make sure its fine?

You can either replace the rag joint or you can upgrade to a solid steering shaft.

Or I guess you can replace the rag joint with a u-joint

I have the same problem with my mustang and I'm trying to decide which method to go after... I'm going to take the steering shaft back out and take a look at what would be involved in trying to swap the rag joint for a u joint but because that's about $140 dollars cheaper than buying a new steering shaft.

any negative affects from upgrading to a solid rag joint, more road vibrations in the wheel maybe?

your steering will be much tighter and more responsive but you will hear/feel chatter when cornering hard. Same as you would with aluminum rack bushings instead of poly ones
