Default ticking noise at idle

when the car is idling, theres a ticking noise coming from what sounds like the middle of the car or somewhere near the tranny. i thought it was an exhaust leak, so i went under and checked but everything is sealed up. its been getting progressively louder over the last couple of weeks or so. also, my buddy told me it might have to do with the tranny and one of the synchros. i remember reading a thread on here about the 3rd gear synchro going bad on the 3650's. i dont know if this is coincidental or not, but 2nd-3rd shifts grind/vibrate occaisonally and 3rd gear feels wierd, so somethings goin on with that. its not as smooth/crisp as it used to be. but could that be the issue?...what do you guys think

I know this may sound odd... I had the same ticking noise - thought it was the lifters, or the tranny looked all over the place, used a stethoscope etc....Left it, until one day i thought i would change out the spark plugs. The last plug, passenger side by the bulkhead was loose. Replaced it anyway, bingo - no ticking noise. Suggest you take a look at that. Reading elsewhere on this forum, watch the torque as you can strip the thread - good luck

I dont see how your syncros could make any noise while the car is just sitting there idling in neutral...arent they only engaged when the the transmission output shaft is engage? ie, in gear>?
