Default ticking

So i have a 98 mustang that started ticking towards the end of last summer. Everyone thought I was nuts because only I heard it. Mind you mechanics too. Now everyone states they can hear it. I have heard that its my lifters. Anyone have a clue if there is anyway to clean these things without removal?
I have heard that lifters to be changed are very expensive.
Is it a complex job to do if i did it on my own?
I have only very novice mechanical experience I.E. Tuneup, headers, oil changes and exhaust.
thanks
