Default What is this noise?!

okay so my 2003 GT has been making a strange noise from the back left of the car while driving.

the sound is something like a cricket/scratching a chalkboard - like a metal screech. its intermittent and the duration of the sound is about a half a second, kinda just like a click. it will happen a few times randomly, maybe like once or twice a minute. . . but each time might be around 1-5 clicks. i checked my exhaust and it doesnt seem to be that (just installed new magnapacks). i have no idea what this could be other than exhaust or suspension but figured maybe someone else has run into this problem.
my car has 53 thousand miles and is well maintained. it just is so annoying and i hope someone recognizes this and has fixed it before.

Did the noise start happening after you installed the exhaust? I kind of have the same problem back when I put my exhaust on. The tip hanger set screws kept coming loose and was allowing the hanger to wiggle inside if the hole on top of the tip where the hanger goes, causing a clicking/screeching noise that your describing.

yeah, i had read about magnapacks making noise from the set screws but i made them so tight that it shouldnt be an issue. also, when i looked under the car for about the 5th time yesterday i was kicking the mufflers and pipes, and shaking the tips and had absolutely no noise at all. might have to put the car on jackstands and put it into gear and let the d.s and wheels spin to maybe see if i can find it then

Yea I ended up putting loctite on my set screws and tightening them with channel locks lol. Your idea about putting it on jackstands sounds good, just make sure you chalk the front wheels, I would hate to hear about another Ferris Bueler incident LOL.

Nice sig BTW, Dazed and Confused FTW

Definitely do the lift.....let the exhaust run and get warm. It may have to be at running temp before it starts making noise.

nah cant be, just got all new brake pads on all 4 corners.

lifted the car up and put the wheels up to 40mph and there was not a sound, also idled it in first and got out and listened and still nothing. i did notice that when i pushed/pulled the wheels away and toward the differential, the axles had a little play in them which i dont know if thats normal. i also knocked on the differential cover and it sounds very hollow. . .is that normal?
