Default removing nut on top of strut

hey guys

just wondering how y'all remove the nut on top of the strut that holds bushings in place. Ive seen ppl say jam a large flat head in the top and then use an open ended wrench to remove the nut. didnt work for me. i dont have an impact wrench which was another suggestion. ive got new struts but cant get this nut off the old ones to switch out the hardware. any ideas? thnx

I used the crowbar that comes with the spare/jack combo in the trunk as a screw driver to hold the top of the 'thing' in place so that it doesn't spin, then a buddy used an adjustable wrench to get the nut loose. It took quite a bit of force, but we got them off.

It helps to have two people for this.

removing the nut is a pain in the A$$. Ive done it a couple of times. Hit it with some penetrating oil, Find something large that will fit in the grove. I have a stripe of steel the fit in the worked perfect cause you could put it long ways. Be carfule not to strip the grove on top or to strip the nut. Ive had both happen, which resulting in the cutting off of the nut.

Try loosening the nut with the car still on the ground using the jack crow bar, with the suspension loaded. Then it should be easier to use the jack crow bar, as others suggested, to loosen the nut one the front suspension is off the ground. Worked for me.

NEVER try to undo the nut while the suspension is loaded..i did that and it shot the strut through the fenderwell. aswell as picked up the front of the car. didnt break nothing other than the fenderwell, and i think it damaged a wiper line cause my wipers wont spray now.
