So, I went to a local transmission shop that my mechanic recommends, and he agrees with me that the noise is not normal, but also says it doesn't sound like the TOB - it sounds like the input bearing in the trans.

He was swamped with cars, so no time or place to put it up on a lift today, but next week he's going to put it on a lift and double-check. Then we'll go from there (and by that I mean he's gonna fix the thing and get rid of the noise, 'cause my extended warranty covers every part inside the trans!)
