Default 20 inch rims = Loss of power

Hi,

We might be purchasing our first mustang within the next week. It is a 2002 yellow gt convertible. They guy just put 20" chrome rims on it (they will most likely be coming off if we get this car)

My question is in regards to amount of power these wheels are stealing. The car didn't seem to have the get up and go that a mustang should have.... How much power are these things taking away?

Thanks for your help.

Edit ... these are the rims.. http://www.aewheel.com/boss/wheels_detail.cfm?id=246

Have you driven another stock Mustang..
None have the get up and go that a Mustang should, it stinks but they are slow [:@]
Aluminum 20's don't feel any different than my 17x10.5 & 315 combo..

We'd need to know the weight of the wheels vs the weight of the stock GT wheels.

well they will definately throw off your speedo thats for sure. It will say your going a lot slower than you actually are and will most likely slow your car down a little but not a whole lot. Just because your car has to make more rotations of the tire to get it moving it will be slowed by a minimal amount but not a whole lot. Your probably just thinking its got a lot less get up because of the speedo.

Good call about taking those off. Those are cool for a tahoe or navigator, but not on a stang. depending on the actual height of the wheel and tire, it might not matter that much. A low profile 20in tire probably isnt much taller than the regular 17in. Get some cobra r's or some saleens. Chrome if u ask me.

I was just going to say the same thing.
20" wheels will not throw off your speedo if you properly size your tires.

You will need some ridiculously low profile tires to match the overall diameter of a 17" wheel/tire to a 20" wheel/tire. His speedo is most likely off.

I have no idea what tire size he has on his car, and I don't think you do either....or do you? [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

All I am saying is if the tire is sized properly it will not be off by much if any, but I did not buy his wheels and tires.......

Stock 245/45/17 diameter is 25.68 with a 4.34" sidewall

If you want to go wider in the rear a 285/25/20 will have a diameter of 25.61 and the speedo at 60 will show 60.1 and you will have a 2.80" sidewall...You will not get closer

With a 255/30/20 the diameter will be 26.02 and the speedo at 60 will show 59.2 and have a 3.01" sidewall ...awfull close

The following is not my car but it has 245/35/20 the diameter is 26.75" The speedo at 60 will show 57.5...it has a 3.37" sidewall

You wont lose power but you will lose some gear. So once you hit third and floor it, it will seem like it takes forever to get to fourth. I would take them off. 20" rims are for ganstas and white people that want to be black.
