Will 275/40-R17 fit on a 17X8 Rim??
Please help me! I wanted to buy slightly larger tires in the rear and i have 17X8 rims. So I am wondering if a 275/40-R17 will fit on the rim and not have tread wear/sidewall bulging problems. Also if this is not the tire for me do you have any recommendations on size? Please specify any brand name you would recommend. Thank you in advance for all your help

Using too wide a tire will push the sidewalls out, giving the tire what is known as the "drag tire" look. If you do this on a non-drag tire, there are several things that can happen:
A poor bead seal is created
The tread is forced into a convex shape, which reduces the tire life. It also affects steering and handling capability.
The car will feel floaty.
The speedometer will read slower than the car is actually going.
Using a skinnier tire than recommended:
Using a tire that is too skinny pulls the sidewalls past the wheel lip. Besides creating the “ricer” look, it is also very dangerous. Too skinny a tire can cause the tire to separate from the rim if you’re going to fast, or while turning a corner.

You can fit the Nitto 555R drag radials in size 275/40/17 on your stock 17X8 rim pretty well because they run pretty narrow. But for any other 275 tire I would have at least a 9" rim. I personally have 17X9 stock style rear rims with 275/40/17 Nittos and it looks a bit narrow on it. I bought these rims anyway cause I may try other 275 size tires later down the line and I like the slightly wider look.

Ha, man I was gettin ready to slam you for that post, good thing I hit re-load a couple minutes ago and saw your little update
I ran 275/40s on 17x8s for years, no issues

I recommend you NOT run anything larger than a 245 or "maybe" a 255 on an 8" wheel. Take what Mineral says in his first post above, as this is correct (beyond some of the subjective comments)
Now, a DR is a bit of a different story. Most are designed to run with the bulge presented by a narrower wheel, but your street tire is not. A 275/40 will not present the correct fit on an 8" wheel even though "... many have done this and have not had problems". Wheels are cheap, so purchase the correct wheel for the tires you plan to run.
For a bit more info and pics on this type of thing, see Oversized tires are OK in 4.6 General section.

You can run that tire size on a 8" rim.
But 9" are more safer
I run 275\40\17 on my cobra r rims on mustang which is perfect and the rim are 9"
