Your gears will whine from a bad install. I had a Ford Tech friend of mine install my frpp 4.10 gears, he hated them BTW. I got them from UPR and they coat them, well that coating threw things off, so a 2 hr install turned into a 3 hr install. Anyway, a bad job will cause noise if it isn't shimmed correctly. If you get them redone, you may want to look at getting explorer 4.10s. Supposedly, and maybe Whitefox can back me up on this, but they come in a complete kit for a low price. Also, to note, no gear whine from my install, I drove it around easy for a couple minutes making sure everything was set, then put them thru the paces. No regrets.

Well if they were silent, then why did you have him "re-adjust" them?

Your story is confusing me. And as far as the Explorer kit... I dont think they make them with 4.10s. Factory rears in them are 3.73, so the "gear whine kit" from Ford includes the parts needed, but with the original 3.73 gears. If the gears and bearings are somewhat new, then you will only need a new set of FRPP gears and the big pinion bearing. Everything else should be re-usable. Hell a new gear swap should only take your tech about an hour to do..

What he had told me though was that instead of just buying 4.10s from a site like summit or upr, to get them from ford because they offer a complete kit with the 4.10s for an explorer so you don't have to buy a master bearing kit or buy all the pieces separately like I did.

I didn't give too much background info. Basically my pinion bearing was loose and it has been the second time it happened . So the guy installing it said I was better off just getting a new pinion bearing so I did and he readjusted he said it wasn't too far off from where they were set but it was closer to spec like between 9 and 12 thous. or something like that. He said they would whine a little bit but it went from barley even noticeable to a very loud annoying constant whine.

Idk much else the guy is going to take a look at this week so we'll see I was just trying to get an idea from the knowledgeable people on here if the gears were toast or if might be something else. If I need new gears then so be it I was contemplating going to 3.73's and they are decently cheap. Thanks for all the help, and answering all my dumb questions

***Problem solved it was my pinion bearings they went south on me, thats what was causing the irritable noise. Strange they were not that old but I guess it can just happen.

New pinion bearing went south, that means the pre-load wasnt set right. It should have like 25 in lbs of drag tops. Someone got a little over-zelous with that impact gun

yea he might have overtightened it he took care of it and replaced both bearings on the pinion and it seems to be fine now. There were some serious shavings in the roller bearings housing and some of the rollers had some chunks taken right out of them, well i'm just glad its all fixed now.
