gear whine

Your gears will whine from a bad install. I had a Ford Tech friend of mine install my frpp 4.10 gears, he hated them BTW. I got them from UPR and they coat them, well that coating threw things off, so a 2 hr install turned into a 3 hr install. Anyway, a bad job will cause noise if it isn't shimmed correctly. If you get them redone, you may want to look at getting explorer 4.10s. Supposedly, and maybe Whitefox can back me up on this, but they come in a complete kit for a low price. Also, to note, no gear whine from my install, I drove it around easy for a couple minutes making sure everything was set, then put them thru the paces. No regrets.

Well if they were silent, then why did you have him "re-adjust" them?
Your story is confusing me. And as far as the Explorer kit... I dont think they make them with 4.10s. Factory rears in them are 3.73, so the "gear whine kit" from Ford includes the parts needed, but with the original 3.73 gears. If the gears and bearings are somewhat new, then you will only need a new set of FRPP gears and the big pinion bearing. Everything else should be re-usable. Hell a new gear swap should only take your tech about an hour to do..

Idk much else the guy is going to take a look at this week so we'll see I was just trying to get an idea from the knowledgeable people on here if the gears were toast or if might be something else. If I need new gears then so be it I was contemplating going to 3.73's and they are decently cheap. Thanks for all the help, and answering all my dumb questions

yea he might have overtightened it he took care of it and replaced both bearings on the pinion and it seems to be fine now. There were some serious shavings in the roller bearings housing and some of the rollers had some chunks taken right out of them, well i'm just glad its all fixed now.
